People's lifestyle near sundarban
DHAKA, BANGLADESH - APRIL 10 : People's lifestyle inside Sundarban at Satkhira , Bangladesh on April 10, 2018.The Sundarbans, which means 'beautiful jungle' in Bengali, is the world's largest mangrove forest covering an area over 10,000 square kilometres. Six thousand square kilometres of the forest are in Bangladeshi territory while the remainder is spread across India's West Bengal state. The Sundarbans was added as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site in 1997. The Rampal Power plant, a 1,320-MW coal-fired power plant, is being constructed 14 kilometers away from the worlds largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans. The government is insistent that the project is needed to supply power to the country and that the plant is safe for the environment, but activists say that it will destroy the forest. About 50 to 60 thousand people depend on the Sundarbans, collecting crabs, fish, firewood and honey to earn a living.
