'Notwithstanding the careful revision of the lists of "killed and wounded," despatches are usually published within three hours of their arrival..."Who are the killed?" "Who are the wounded?" were the constant questions when, on the 22nd [November], the official list of the Battle of Inkerman found its way, soon after twelve o'clock, among the dense crowd which...blocked up the roadway in front of the offices of the London Gazette...the strong will and the stronger hearts of a fearing, hopeful mass knew no control. It was a firm, strong, and sometimes silent pressure towards the doors - strong men in front, and behind crowds of women and children.
