"English Village" in Indonesia
KEDIRI, EAST JAVA, INDONESIA - 2013/06/21: English language learning notes in the village of Pare. 'English Village' is the nickname for the village of Pare in Kediri, East Java. The village has around 114 English language colleges and institutions, which has led to the whole area becoming a centre of English education in the region. English has permeated the region to an extent that it has become the lingua franca of the area. The low cost of living and easy access by bicycles has turned this remote village into a prime destination for students aiming to learn English. Mr. Osen Kalend started the first course called Basic English Course in the region in 1985. Since then, institutes have grown all over the town including some where teaching takes place in huts and on the porches of residential houses.. (Photo by Arief Priyono/LightRocket via Getty Images)
