Banger Racing Enthusiasts Attend Bank Holiday Race Meet
REDRUTH, ENGLAND - APRIL 04: A banger racing team try to get a car ready for another heat at the United Downs Raceway banger racing meet in St Day near Redruth on April 4, 2010 in Cornwall, United Kingdom. Banger racing is a contact motorsport - popular in Europe but especially in the UK and Ireland - in which drivers of old and scrap vehicles race against one another around a dirt or tarmac race track, with the race won by the first car to the chequered flag, while deliberately attempting to destroy opposing vehicles. Meetings throughout the summer months, feature a variety of different classes of car and even bizarre versions of the sport using cars towing caravans. Traditionally banger racers, used the Ford Granada and Cortina in the 2-litre National Bangers class, but the lack of available cars now means the more modern Ford Mondeo is the car of choice. Some vehicle enthusiasts have objected to banger racing claiming it is responsible for the destruction of countless classic cars, such as old Rovers, Jaguars, and Fords. However many banger racers argue that the old cars they race are fit only for the scrap yard and are well beyond economic repair. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)
